Private Used Cars for Sale vs. GM Certified Pre-Owned Vehicles

Wondering why you should buy a GM Certified Pre-Owned Vehicle when you can grab a used car from a private owner at as much as $2000 less? Buying from a private used car seller may cost a bit less, but the risks of repair costs after purchase and the uncertainty of the most valuable components lifespan can cost exponentially more than $2000. The possibilities are literally frightening, and frighteningly likely to happen when you’re not buying certified-used from a reputable dealership:

ENGINE REPAIRS: There are hundreds of internal lubricated parts. The average repair for an internal engine failure repair costs between $2000 - $5000 if the engine needs replaced, and there may be symptoms present that are not detectable by the average used car buyer.

TRANSMISSION REPAIRS: There are internal lubricated parts, including seals, gaskets and clutches that work interdependently. The average cost of repair for internal failure cost between $2000 - $4000 or more for the average vehicle. Again, there may be symptoms present that are not detectable by the average used car buyer.

DRIVE AXLES and DIFFERENTIAL REPAIRS: Repairs to any of the vehicles drive axles or differentials can be very expensive, especially if they were not maintained. The average repair costs can range from $1000 - $2000 for an internal failure, more if the complete assembly needs to be replaced.

FOUR WHEEL DRIVE: ALL WHEEL DRIVE REPAIRS: These are also very complex systems that are very expensive to repair or replace, costing $1000 - $2000.

STEERING SYSTEM REPAIRS: There are 100+ individual parts (moving and stationary) - The average cost of repair is $500 - $1500.

SUSPENSION SYSTEM REPAIRS: There are many individual parts depending on advanced systems; the average cost of repair is $500 to $1000 or more.

BRAKE REPAIRS: There are many individual wearable parts not including the Anti-Lock Brake System (ABS) - The average cost of repair is $350 to over $1000.

COOLING SYSTEM REPAIRS: There are many components in the cooling system that are affected by the normal wear and tear of driving; the average cost of repair is over $400. Timing belt driven water pumps can cost over $900.

SEALS and GASKETS REPAIRS: Cylinder head gaskets and intake manifold gaskets are common failures to many vehicles; the average cost of repair can range from $500 to over $1000.

AIR CONDITIONER and HEATER REPAIRS: Many vehicles do not blow cold air. The seller states it just needs a tune-up charge of freon. This means the original charge must have leaked out somewhere over time. A professional inspector has many years of training and experience to detect where freon normally leaks from and may be able to tell with a visual inspection of the air conditioning components if evidence is present. - The average cost of repair can be over $1000!!

ELECTRICAL SYSTEM REPAIRS: Many electrical component problems can go undetected to the un-trained eye. The average cost of repair can be over $500.

When you buy a used car, don’t compromise the peace of your mind for an extra $2000 up front. Sponsorship arrangement will provide money to support middle school athletics

CHARLOTTE, N.C. – Aug. 3, 2011 – A $250,000 sponsorship agreement with Hendrick Automotive Group will allow Charlotte-Mecklenburg Schools to offer a complete program of middle school sports for the 2011-12 academic year.

Due to budget cuts, CMS had expected to reduce the number of middle school sports offered in previous years. The Hendrick sponsorship, combined with a contribution from an unidentified donor, provides the remaining amount necessary to fund the full lineup of 13 sports at all 32 middle schools for more than 6,500 students participating in athletics across the district.

“We believe that sports play a crucial role in students’ education and development,” said CMS interim superintendent Hugh Hattabaugh. “Hendrick Automotive Group’s generous support is a great example of how the support of local businesses can make an enormous difference in the lives of children.”

The sponsorship agreement designates HendrickCars.com as an official sponsor of CMS athletics, which offers opportunities for more than 16,000 middle and high school students.

The agreement gives the company naming rights of statistics announced during breaks at high school athletic events; recognition as a title partner in announcements at the end of high school events; and signage that will be displayed at middle and high school athletic events. CMS and Hendrick Automotive Group will explore options for additional promotions, and the arrangement will not change any existing partnership agreements between individual schools’ booster clubs and other organizations.

CMS will use the sponsorship money to help pay coaching stipends, fees for officials and transportation costs for middle school athletics. Students must still pay some sports-participation fees, introduced by CMS for all middle and high school student-athletes last year.

“As someone who participated in sports growing up and has kids who played, I understand the impact those experiences can have on young people,” said Rick Hendrick, chairman of Hendrick Automotive Group.

“The lessons athletics teaches – teamwork, communication, leadership, dedication – are valuable, and they’re carried forward into life and business. We feel this sponsorship fits with our company values, and we’re proud to be associated with everyone who makes it possible for these student-athletes to be successful.”

Chevrolet Sonic is Now in Production

General Motors said it started production of its Chevrolet Sonic subcompact car today at its Orion Assembly plant. The Sonic, which will go on sale this fall, is the only subcompact car manufactured by an automaker in the U.S.

GM expects the fuel-efficient Sonic to get 40 m.p.g. on the highway when paired with the 1.4-liter turbo engine and six-speed manual transmission The car will come with 10 air bags, air-conditioning, power door locks, remote keyless entry and 15-inch alloy wheels.

GM said in June it will sell the Sonic at a starting price of $14,495 for the sedan version and $15,395 for the hatchback. That places the 2012 Sonic sedan $500 above the starting price of the Ford Fiesta and $1,375 below the Honda Fit.

The GM auctioned Volt sells for $225,000 to a bidder named ChargeOn!

Recently General Motors auctioned off the first available Chevrolet Volt to benefit the Detroit Public Schools Foundation. In the auction the Volt sold for a whopping $225,000 to a bidder named ChargeOn.
The man that bid under the screen name of ChargeOn is none other than our very own Rick Hendrick, a longtime Chevrolet dealer and owner of Hendrick Motorsports, the American racing juggernaut established back in 1984. It turns out that Hendrick, an avid car collector, just had to have a Volt to add to his collection and felt compelled to support such a good cause by giving back to the community and the Detroit Public Schools.
After winning the auctioned Volt, Hendrick stated:
This was an opportunity to own a piece of history while giving back to the community. I have been a Chevrolet dealer for more than 30 years, and the Volt is one of the most exciting and important new cars since we opened our first dealership in 1976.
Our congrats go out to Mr. Hendrick for winning the auction and, more importantly, for supporting a good cause.

City Chevrolet brings some good news for all Chevy fans. Chevrolet’s small car Aveo’s production will start in Seoul, Korea next year and the U.S.-assembled version of the car will be rolled out in 2012.

The US production of the Aveo at the Orion Township plant was reconfirmed last week. Originally, the new Aveo was unveiled at the 2010 North American International Auto Show in Detroit in January as Chevrolet Aveo RS, a concept car. It was later displayed in production form at the Paris show recently.

GM Daewoo has led the design and R&D of the new model as GM’s global mini and small car development base. Aveo with its solid fuel economy rating and spacious feature-rich interior is going to grab more attention than ever. And with its super competitive price tag it will be a strong contender for the economy car circlet.

The sales success of compact and subcompact fuel efficient vehicles is remarkable in US and across the globe. The new small and beautiful Aveo is likely to be introduced globally after it is rolled out in Korea in the first half of 2011.

Seven important tips if you are involved in an accident

Everyone loves a good ride and does their best to drive responsibly and defensively. But there can be a time when one may get involved in an accident. We would like to suggest you take a few steps that can make all the difference for you, your family or friends who are involved in an accident and need help. City Chevrolet, your local Chevy car dealer in Charlotte, NC is happy to provide you with some tips to tackle post-accident negotiations. Here are some steps to be taken in the event of an accident that will help you resolve the incident without the possibility of future repercussions and provide you with a smooth insurance and repair process.

1. Be prepared

Make sure you have your insurance information -- name of provider, policy number and phone number and keep in both your wallet and your glove compartment. It is recommended to always carry a disposable camera or use your Camera phone. Also have a pen and paper in your car at all times.

2. Check for injuries

Before you even look at the damage done to your car, check yourself, co-passengers, and the individual(s) in the other vehicle for injuries. If there are injuries that need medical attention, call 911.

3. Call the Police

Experts advise that in any accident you should call the police. Even if the other person says, “I'll take care of you; I've got a brother-in-law with a body shop that can fix your car”, you still want to call. A police report will provide an official record of the accident. If you're on an interstate highway, call county or state law enforcement. Be sure you get the police report.

4. Gather information

Be sure to get the name, contact information, and insurance information of the other driver. Take photos of surrounding area, traffic signs, lane markings and the damage to vehicles involved. Also write down the details of the accident.

5. Don't admit guilt

Even if the accident was your fault, simply collect contact information from the other drivers and do not confess to anything until you speak with your insurance company.

6. Call insurance company

The festivities began at noon on Thursday, July 15th with the event wrapping up around 3pm that afternoon. Catering was provided by Amber House Restaurant serving up a delicious Barbecue and an array of side items.

Over 60 local businesses attended this event to see first-hand the City Chevrolet difference, as well as our recent face-lift which features a Hendrick Motorsports theme. In addition, several of our key vendors participated in our event demonstrating and answering questions regarding their products in the vehicle display.

We hope everyone who attended walked away with full bellies and

enjoyed the assortment of great giveaways.

Overall, the event was a great success and it was a wonderful opportunity for us to network in our own backyard and community. City Chevrolet Employee Exceeds Goal in MS Walk

Internet sales manager, Melissa Holt, exceeded her goal in raising funds to help the Multiple Sclerosis Society find a cure for the disease. Melissa, along with her sister and mother were determined to raise $500 for the local Walk Against MS that was held on May 15th at SouthPark. The ladies succeeded and surpassed the goal, raising a whopping $585!
"I would like to say ‘thank you’ to everyone who donated to the cause, I greatly appreciate it," said Melissa. “Hopefully, we will one day find a cure for MS, because the number of people living with MS increases every hour of every day.”

MS research has made some incredible advances recently, but the world can still only offer disease management drugs and therapies to the 400,000 people living with MS in America.

Melissa took part in the march because a family member has been diagnosed with MS, points out that the National Mutliple Sclerosis Society funds more MS research than any other private organization. In addition to supporting studies which hope to reveal the cause and course of the disease, the Society also provides much needed education, programs, and services to everyone who is affected by MS.

City Chevrolet & Habitat for Humanity

A dozen of Cit y Che vrolet employees decided to give back to the Charlotte Community last month in a very generous way! City Chevrolet partnered with Habitat for Humanity to repair the roof for an elderly West Charlotte lady. Twelve employees donated their time on March 4th and 5th to strip worn shingles, replace rotten wood, and re-shingle the steep 7/12 pitch roof of a 75-year old home.

Habitat for Humanity’s Critical Home Repair serves economically disadvantaged homeowners by providing urgent major repairs to prevent homeowners from being displaced and to protect Charlotte’s affordable housing. In the first year alone, Habitat for Humanity’s Critical Home Repair served 12 families and corrected over 500 major code violations. While City Chevrolet employees repaired the roof, other employees from other businesses and organizations helped repair other portions of the home.

The project was organized by salesperson, Adrian Drayton who described it as “an effort to build good will and give something back to the community that has supported City Chevrolet for 75 years.” Taking part in the project were Larry Parker (sales), Tim Dobbins (sales), Marcus Arnette (service), Donnie Bell (body shop), Jack Umlauf (sales), John Donne (fleet), Jimmy Poole (service), Andrew Smith (service), Larry McCain (sales), Travis Menear (fleet), and James Potter (sales). For those that didn’t feel comfortable scaling the steep roof helped below as part of the clean-up crew.

We would like to thank all the City employees that helped out and a big “Thanks” to Habitat for Humanity for providing a program that truly improves the lives of others in a very special way!

Rick Hendrick, owner of several NASCAR teams and Hendrick Motorsports, and Chairman & CEO of Hendrick Automotive Group, came to visit "the new" City Chevrolet on Friday, November 13, 2009. City Chevrolet has recently experienced a "face lift." With mandates from Chevrolet on making all the Chevy stores look uniform, in addition to a little work that needed to be done, since City has been at its current location since 1966 without too many major renovations, we've had plenty of changes occur throughout the dealership over the past month.

While Mr. Hendrick (see photo above, first from right) was here, he got to chatting with Elizabeth Hastings (above, second from right) and her 9-year old son Andrew (above, second from left), who were purchasing a 2004 Suburban from Larry McCain (above, first from left). Elizabeth was expressing her gratitude to the team at City Chevrolet, specifically Larry McCain (salesperson), Bruce Forret (Pre-Owned Sales Director), and Jerry Ferrell (General Manager), for their assitance in helping her get the SUV she's been wanting.

The Hastings family has quite a story. Two years ago, son, Andrew, was hit (literally) by a car. Andrew lost his leg, and since then, has had 10 surgeries. His last surgery was in March of this year. Unfortunately, Elizabeth's husband, Sargeant Robert Hastings, had left for Iraq 2 days prior to Andrew's surgery and is still currently serving overseas. Andrew has a prosthetic leg and has had to have 8 prosthetics over the past two years, since he has to get a new one after each surgery and also as he grows. He is due to have at least 1 more surgery. In addition, Elizabeth Hastings is fighting Cancer.

Elizabeth tells us that Andrew has been asking for a Suburban for the past 2 years. He kept saying "We're never going to get a Suburban!" Needless to say, Andrew was surprised and delighted when they came in to finally get their Suburban. The Hastings have 3 children and the Suburban is much needed. Salesperson Larry McCain assured Elizabeth, "If it's the last thing on Earth I do, I'll get you a Suburban."

Elizabeth told Rick Hendrick this story when he was in here that day and Mr. Hendrick did something that took the breath away from Elizabeth and Andrew...he paid for their Suburban! As if meeting Rick Hendrick and having him pose for a couple pictures with her son wasn't exciting enough that day, they now had the Suburban of their dreams and it was already paid for. This is just one more thing that further displays the generosity displayed by Rick Hendrick. When I asked Elizabeth what she felt, she said, "It's amazing how God has been right there holding my hand through this ordeal. Andrew got hit and saw an angel on the side of the road. From that day, I knew that God was with us through the whole experience."

OnStar Saves the Day...Again!

This is a real-life situation where, yet another customer, is help by OnStar. OnStar leads the industry in the most comprehensive options of Stole Vehicle Assitance services. The 2008 Chevrolet Malibu is the highest-ranking midsize car in initial quality in the 2008 IQS conducted by J. D. Power and Associates. The midsize sedan segment is the backbone of the domestic auto industry, and sales of midsize cars have overtaken other segments, especially in the light of the U.S. new-vehicle market shifting back to cars, rather than pickups and SUVs.

The Chevrolet Malibu midsize sedan was redesigned for 2008 and features fresh styling, more available power, and some more safety features. The Malibu shares its basic design with the Pontiac G6, and is the smaller of Chevy's two midsize sedans. The 2008 Malibu can seat five, is 6 inches longer in wheelbase and 3 inches longer overall, and available in LS, LT and LTZ trim. The Malibu Maxx hatchback makes an exit for 2008. Considering trading in your vehicle? Take advantage of the CAR Allowance Rebate System (CARS), a federal program that helps the consumers buy or lease a more environmentally-friendly vehicle from dealers when they trade in a less fuel-efficient car or truck. The CARS is basically a $1 billion government program through which the consumers can get a $3,500 or $4,500 discount from the dealer when they trade in their old vehicle and buy or lease a new one. One main plus point of the program is that the consumers do not have to register anywhere or at any time for this program. Here are a few important points to keep in mind to utilize the benefits of this program.

Your vehicle must be less than 25 years old on the trade-in date

Only purchase or lease of new vehicles qualify

Generally, trade-in vehicles must get 18 or less MPG (some very large pick-up trucks and cargo vans have different requirements)

Trade-in vehicles must be registered and insured continuously for the full year preceding the trade-in

The program requires the scrapping of your eligible trade-in vehicle, and that the dealer disclose to you an estimate of the scrap value of your trade-in. The scrap value, however minimal, will be in addition to the rebate, and not in place of the rebate

Last but not the least, the CARS program runs through November 1, 2009 or when the funds are exhausted, whichever comes first

Blue Devil vs. Blue Angel

As a feature on MotorTrend.com, they compared the speeds of the Blue Devil Corvette against a Blue Angel. The Chevy Devil on the ground beats the Angel in the air in the tests from "0-30" with both "Blues" clocking in at 1.6 seconds, all the way up to "0-70" where the Blue Angel clocked in at 4.2 seconds and the Blue Devil at 4.1 seconds. However, once the afterburners kick in, the Blue Angel goes full speed ahead and there was no stopping it, clocking in the "0-170" in 10.9 seconds, and the Blue Devil Corvette at a respectable 23.1. Who else other than a Chevy Blue Devil would even dare face a little ol' airplane anyway?

MEET KYLIE BLANK...City Chevrolet's youngest patron. Kylie just turned 5 years old on May 6th and is the daughter of Joanne and Bobby Blank, longtime customers of our dealership. Mom says that Kylie loves coming in to see City's primary mascot, Precious the dog. Precious used to come into the dealership with the late Papa Joe Hendrick, and has since been attached to Jake McFee. Every morning, Jake picks up Precious from Mrs. Hendrick's home nearby and Precious spends the day with Jake running errands and "shaking hands and kissing babies" around town. Whenever her mom and dad come in to service one of their 2 vehicles purchased from City Chevrolet, Kylie spends most of her time petting and playing with Precious. She also recently met our newly-adopted secondary mascot, Blazer the cat. Blazer is a stray that periodically came around the dealership looking for food. Every morning an employee will feed Blazer, so now it's like he (or she...we don't know) is part of the family. Kylie absolutely loves animals, as their family has 2 cats and a boxer named Roxie. Ladies and Gentlemen...Start Your Engines!

The Queen City Corvette Club will be at City Chevrolet on Saturday, May 16 from 9am-3pm for their annual Charity Car Show. This event is FREE to the public. All you need to do is come on out and check out the rows of classic and new Corvettes that the Queen City Corvette Club members will have on display. From the "daily drivers" to the "mint condition," the QCCC has it all.

Throughout the year, the QCCC members raise money through the sponsorship of car shows, 50/50 raffles, and silent auctions. The club has a charity committee that is responsible for choosing the charities that the club will support on a yearly basis. The club supports both local and national organizations. Last year they raised money for the U.S.O, the Matthews Help Center, Operation Homefront, and the National Corvette Museum. As a separate event, the QCCC members "adopt" families of those who serve overseas in the Air National Guard. They are supplied with kids' ages and "wish lists" and are able to help these families have an extra-special Christmas.

To become a member of the Queen City Corvette Club, you need to own or lease a Corvette, and attend at least 3 business meetings and 2 social events within a 6-month time frame. City Chevrolet sponsors Porter Ridge Athletic Association and Matthews Athletic Recreation Association with equipment, clinics and helps raise thousands of dollars with a Chevrolet giveaway.

PRESS RELEASE: Giving something back to the Charlotte community, Rick Hendrick's City Chevrolet announced today (Friday, April 17, 2009) that they are partnering with Porter Ridge Athletic Association and Matthews Athletic Recreation Association to provide the players and coaches with equipment, instructional clinics and a chance to raise $10,000 in funds for the 2009 season. The program demonstrates Chevrolet and the Chevrolet dealerships as America's brand by bringing together America's favorite pastime and America's favorite car company.

To support youth baseball in its local community, City Chevrolet will provide Porter Ridge Athletic Association and Matthews Athletic Recreation Association with equipment bags, ball buckets, coaches' dry-erase clipboards and t-shirts. Also, thanks to the dealership and other participating area Chevrolet dealers, league members will have a chance to attend a Chevy Youth Baseball Instructional Clinic taught by professionals provided by the Ripken Baseball group.

Offering additional support to the community, Porter Ridge Athletic Association and Matthews Athletic Recreation Association will have the opportunity to raise as much as $10,000 through the Chevy-Vehicle Raffle where a new Chevy Malibu and Chevy Traverse, along with autographed Cal Ripken, Jr. memorabilia, will be given away. City Chevrolet and other area Chevrolet dealerships are donating the two cars to be raffled off. All proceeds from the raffle go to the participating leagues and communities.
